THE END. KIRIBATI is GONE.

December 1st, 2011

The story of Kiribati mirrors the modern life in many developing Pacific countries – nations that have fallen to hardship due to global warming and rising sea levels. Kiribati is a small island nation of 33 atolls spread out in the South Pacific; the area is the size of Alaska but the amount of dry land could fit within Manhattan. Inhabited by about 100,830 people, Kiribati is among the world’s poorest countries. It has few natural resources other than fish and copra, the dried meat of coconut.

Kiribati aroused my curiosity after I’d read an interview with Anote Tong, the president of the small island nation, who warned about his country becoming uninhabitable due to the rising sea levels and increasing salination. As Mr. Tong put it: “Kiribati might alreadyhave reached the point of no return. To plan for the day when you no longer have a country is indeed painful, but I think we have to do that.” The story of a disappearing country was so powerful I just had to experience it for myself.

As mentioned in my previous blog post, the project “Prepared for tomorrow” for NKBM bank was one of my biggest undertakings this year. The first part included 4 ambassadors of the campaign, you can check those photos here - together with a bit of project background. The second part of my work was focused on photographing 15 well-known Slovenians for print ads and brochures. Take a look at some of the photos below and let me know what you think in the comments!

Prepared for tomorrow by NKBM, part 1/2

November 2nd, 2011

What do you do when you get the chance of photographing a bunch of people you really respect? You say yes, of course! Publicis Slovenia invited me to collaborate on an exciting project for NKBM, a Slovenian bank, that allowed me to do to exactly that! This was one of my biggest undertakings this year and coming pretty close to a dream project.

How to get Slovenian people to think about their financial future? And while at it, how to position NKBM bank as the answer to their financial problems? Publicis came up with a campaign called “Prepared for tomorrow”, which measured just how prepared the Slovenians are for the future. My work was split in two parts - first photographing the so-called ambassadors of the campaign. 4 well-known Slovenians were brought into the project to stress the importance of planning your financial future. The ambassadors are each pushing the envelope in their respective field and that really made this photoshoot an inspiring experience.

Ivo Boscarol is the founder of Pipistrel, the world-leader in the field of light aircrafts. Pipistrel has won more awards than they can count, winning this year’s NASA Challenge as well. Just of glimpse of their technical prowess: Virus, their winning light aircraft, could carry 4 people for 700km at speeds around 200km/h. The cost of the flight? Just a couple of Euros. Besides being an amazing innovator and businessman, Ivo Boscarol is also an amateur photographer, which made the photoshoot that more fun and exciting. Needless to say I enjoyed every minute of it.

Janez Lotrič is a world-class Slovenian tenorist and a regular guest on opera stages all around the world. He’s a true professional, used to photographers and, as all remarkable people do, Janez Lotrič brings his amazing energy to everything he does. We really hit it off and it was great working with him!

Erika and Simona Fabjan, or the Fabjan sisters as they are more commonly known, are the most successful beach-volley team in Slovenia. For the first time in slovenian history they’ve qualified for the FIVB Swatch World Tour, which is an inspiring achievement! The photos were shot on a sunny day in Ljubljana on a … volleyball court, where else!

The second part of my work was photographing 15 well-known Slovenians for print ads and brochuers. An updated with those photos coming soon.
